PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE:

Michael has almost 20 years’ experience in commercial litigation and arbitration with a focus on energy and resources, infrastructure, corporations, insolvency, financial services, competition, professional negligence and insurance disputes. He regularly appears as counsel or junior counsel in the superior Australian courts and commercial arbitrations and is instructed by international and national firms as well as local firms on a wide range of commercial matters.

Michael was a solicitor working in commercial litigation and arbitration with boutique litigation and national firms before joining the independent bar in 2002. Between 2007 and 2009 he was an advocate with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s international arbitration group in Paris.  During that time he acted as counsel in international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations concerning energy and resources, construction and financial services.

Michael co-teaches International Commercial Arbitration at the UWA Law School. He is a co-author of “A Practical Guide to Investment Treaties – Asia Pacific”.

Michael is a director of the Fremantle Port Authority and the Perth Centre for Energy and Resources Arbitration Ltd (PCERA). He is also an honorary fellow of the UWA Law School.

Michael was educated at UWA and was awarded bachelors of law and economics and masters of law.
